The Begenning (1920-1947)

Kundan Lal Gujral

The inception of this unique fine dining experience dates back in Peshawar in British India in 1920. The Founder, Shri Kundan Lal Gujral, converted underground pits used by local villagers to bake breads to one of the most iconic cooking means of today. Tandoor was conceived by Moti Mahal and continues to swell today putting Tandoori Chicken and Tandoori Cooking on world gourmet map

The Spark (1947-1970)

The long journey

When India partitioned in 1947, Gujral moved to Delhi and started Moti Mahal in his new home city, Darya Ganj. The place quickly proved popular and within a year and Kundan Lal Gujral turned his small road side eatery into a 400 seat restaurant. He deduced tomato gravy, lushed in butter and cream that softened his left over chickens. The combination proved to be a master stroke and thus, by accident or an act of genius, the Butter Chicken was born.

Dignitaries like former Indian Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, former President Dr. Zakir Hussain and actors Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Soviet leader Mikhail Gobachev were among the famous patrons.
